How to Grow King Trumpet Mushrooms with a Grow Kit

How to Grow King Trumpet Mushrooms with a Grow Kit

Grow thick, meaty, restaurant-quality King Trumpet mushrooms at home with this ready-to-fruit grow kit from Redwood Mushroom Supply. King Trumpets are prized for their dense stems, firm texture, and rich umami flavor, making them excellent for searing, roasting, grilling, and slicing into hearty mushroom “steaks.”

King Trumpets grow differently than standard oyster mushrooms. They are top-fruiting mushrooms, which means they should grow from the top of the block—not from side cuts. They also prefer cooler temperatures, high humidity, and gentle fresh air.

With the right setup, King Trumpets can produce impressive, restaurant-style mushrooms right from your kitchen, countertop, or automated mushroom grow tent. Each block arrives fully colonized on a hardwood-based substrate and professionally incubated, so you can focus on fruiting — no prep work or special tools required.

How to get started

1

Cold Shock and Prepare the Top Surface

King Trumpets prefer cooler conditions than Pink Oyster mushrooms. If your room is warm, pinning may be slower or uneven. Keep the grow bag closed until you are ready to start fruiting.

  1. Cold Shock (Recommended): To trigger stronger, more uniform pinning (especially if your growing area is warm), place the unopened bag in a refrigerator at 34–40°F for 12–24 hours. Then return it to your fruiting area.
Do not freeze the block. Cold shock is optional, but it can be helpful when pins are slow to appear.
  2. Loosen the Surface: Before opening the bag, gently massage the top surface of the block through the plastic for 10–20 seconds to loosen the mycelium and encourage even pin formation.
The goal is to lightly loosen the surface where mushrooms will form. Do not break apart the block, shake the bag, or crush the substrate.
2

Watch for Pinning then Open the Top of the Bag

King Trumpets should fruit from the top of the block. Monitor for small pins pressing against the plastic at the top of the bag.

A. Growing in an Automated Mushroom Tent

Place the unopen block in the directly in the tent and wait until you see small white bumps, knobs, or young mushrooms pressing against the plastic near the top of the block. These are pins. Keeping the bag closed during this early stage helps the block hold humidity.

B. Growing on the Countertop:

Place the unopened block in a cool room (best temperature between 50-65°F) with indirect light and wait to see pinning. Once pins are visible near the top:

  • Wash your hands or wear clean gloves.
  • Use clean scissors or a clean knife.
  • Cut the top of the bag just below the heat seal.
  • Leave several inches of plastic above the substrate to form a humidity collar.

Do not cut holes in the sides of the bag. King Trumpets should fruit from the top.

Expected timing: Pins often form within 1-2 weeks after fruiting conditions begin.

3

Add Humidity and Mist Lightly

A. Growing in an Automated Tent

Aim for:

Temperature: 50–65°F
Humidity: 85–90%
Fresh air: Gentle, steady air exchange
Light: Indirect room light or low grow light

If your tent is holding humidity well, misting may not be necessary. Mist lightly only if the top surface looks dry. Too much water can damage young pins or create wet spots.

B. Growing on the Countertop: Create Adjust your Humidity

  • If your room is dry, loosely place a clean plastic bag over the grow kit as a DIY humidity tent. The bag should not press tightly against the mushrooms.
  • Fill the included sprayer with filtered or distilled water and lightly mist the inside walls of the humidity tent bag 2-3 times daily, or more often in dry conditions. Use a fine mist (damp, not soaked). Leave the bottom loose or cut several small holes for fresh air.
  • Mist the exposed top surface lightly only if it looks dry. Use a fine mist. The surface should look lightly damp, not soaked. Avoid letting water pool on the block.
4

Adjust the Bag as Mushrooms Grow

As mushrooms grow taller, gradually roll the grow bag down. Keep about 4–5 inches of plastic above the substrate when possible.

This helps hold humidity close to the mushrooms while still allowing fresh air.

5

When to Harvest

King Trumpets are ready when:

  • Stems are thick, smooth, and fully elongated
  • Caps are firm and just beginning to flatten

Gently twist at the base, or cut cleanly with a knife where the stem meets the block.

FAQs and Tips

What is the ideal condition for King Trumpet mushrooms?

  • Best temperature: 50-65°F
  • Humidity: High; 85-90% is ideal in a tent
  • Fresh air: Gentle, steady fresh air; avoid direct fan blast
  • Opening style: Top-fruiting only
  • Expected timing: Pins often form within 1-2 weeks after fruiting conditions begin. After pins form, mushrooms may take another 10-20 days to mature.
  • Difficulty: Intermediate beginner

Should I cut the side of the bag?

No. King Trumpets are top-fruiting mushrooms. Cut the top of the bag and keep the sides intact.

Do King Trumpets need a cold shock?

Cold shock is optional, but it can help trigger more even pinning, especially if your room is warmer than ideal or pins are slow to appear.

How long do King Trumpets take to grow?

Pins often form within 1–2 weeks after fruiting conditions begin. After pins form, mushrooms may take another 10–20 days to mature.

Why are my King Trumpets slow?

They grow more slowly than many oyster mushrooms. Keep conditions cool, humid, and stable. If pins are slow, try a 12–24 hour cold shock.

Why is the surface dry?

Mist lightly with a fine spray or increase humidity. Avoid soaking the block or letting water pool on the surface.

Why are the stems thin or caps very small?

Increase gentle fresh air slightly, but do not point a fan directly at the block.

Can I get a second flush?

King Trumpets rarely produce a strong second flush, and when they do, it is typically very small and inconsistent compared to the first harvest.
