Shiitake blocks naturally go through a browning and popcorning stage before fruiting. Your block may look brown, lumpy, bumpy, or uneven when it arrives. This is normal and does not mean the block is low quality. In many cases, it means the block is mature and ready to produce mushrooms.

Unlike oyster mushroom blocks, shiitake should not be fruited by cutting a slit in the plastic bag. Remove the plastic completely and fruit the block as a bare block in a humid environment with gentle fresh air.

How to Use Your Shiitake Grow Kit

Remove the shiitake block from the RMS cardboard shipping box.
Carefully cut away and remove the original plastic grow bag completely.
Place the bare block upright on a clean plate, tray, or shallow dish.
If you see small mushrooms already forming inside the bag, remove any that look overgrown, damaged, slimy, or trapped against the plastic. Healthy-looking mushrooms can be harvested.
For countertop growing, loosely place a clean plastic bag over the block to create a DIY humidity tent. The bag should not press tightly against the block or mushrooms.
Mist the inside walls of the humidity tent 1–2 times per day. The goal is humid air around the block, not a soaking-wet surface.
Leave the bottom of the humidity tent loose or cut several small holes so fresh air can enter.
For automated grow tent growing, place the bare block on a tray or rack in the tent and maintain high humidity with gentle fresh air.
Keep the block in indirect light and avoid direct sun, heaters, vents, or direct fan blast.
Harvest when caps open like small umbrellas but the edges still curve slightly downward.

Do not fruit shiitake by cutting a small slit in the original plastic bag. Shiitake performs best when removed from the plastic and fruited as a bare block.

Shitake

All my other mushrooms were in great fruiting conditions and my grey oysters, king trumpet, and lions Maine have started to grow. The shitake unfortunately came out the bag already sprouting mushrooms. They look a little smushed and kind of deformed in growing so far. It’s been a couple of days but I’m going to give it a little bit more time for it to flex in its new space in my Martha tent/shroom grow tent. (Images were taken outside of Martha tent sorry for the blur)

Sometimes shiitake kits can sprout early, but shiitake is very hardy, they often can continue to produce multiple harvests. We hope yours recovers nicely. Shiitake kit

These grew very well in my Martha tent! I like to cook them on a charcoal grill with butter and garlic salt. Very tasty! The kit provided enough to share with my neighbors. This would be a 5 star review however the kit shipped to me with a hole in the bag. There was a full flush of mushrooms upon arrival which I wasn’t thrilled about. I did get a second flush though. Every other kit I’ve received from Redwood has been exceptional. Great experience!

Still trying to figure out how to grow these with larger flushes. We’re only getting a few mushrooms from a block. They are very flavorful though.

If you’re only getting a few mushrooms per flush, you can usually improve yields on the next round. After your current flush, let the block rest for 7–14 days, then fully submerge it in cold water for 4–6 hours (keep it weighted down). Drain it and return it to your setup—new pins should form within about 1–2 weeks. A firm “thump” before soaking can also help trigger a stronger flush.

Growing well but seem a little scrunched

Growing well but seem a little scrunched. I peeled away the bag because the mushrooms seemed to be pushing out but unable to open. This has been the fastest of the 4 kinds I purchased (pink and grey pearl and king trumpet) but is the least aesthetic, kind of jumbled.

What you’re seeing is pretty common with shiitake, and you were actually right to take it out of the bag. If the block already has mushrooms forming, they need more space and airflow to develop properly—otherwise they can end up looking crowded or “scrunched” like you described.

For future flushes, focus on giving them good fresh air while keeping humidity up, which helps the caps open more evenly. The nice part is shiitake blocks can produce multiple flushes. After this round, let it rest for 7–14 days, then fully soak it in cold water for 4–6 hours, drain, and place it back into your setup—you’ll often see a more uniform second flush once things are dialed in.
